Leapmotor launches first electric van in China

Leapmotor is launching its first van in China. The seven-seater D99 will be available as a pure electric model and as a range-extender vehicle, starting at a price equivalent to just over €32,000. It is not yet known whether the D99 will be offered outside China in future.

Leapmotor is expanding its model range in China with the introduction of electric vans. The D99, the company’s first seven-seater, is positioned as a premium offering, with six variants available. Prices for the range start at 249,800 yuan and go up to 319,800 yuan (approximately €32,250 to €41,300) – relatively expensive by Chinese standards. Deliveries are set to begin on 20 July.

Leapmotor states that the D99 measures 5.28 x 2.0 x 1.88 metres, with a wheelbase of 3.11m. Both the battery-electric vehicle and range extender versions are available in three variants each – Enjoy Edition, Smart Edition, and Flagship Edition – resulting in the six configurations mentioned earlier. The all-wheel-drive BEV version is based on a 1,000-volt architecture and features a 115kWh battery from CATL, offering a range of up to 700km under the CLTC standard. According to CNEVPost, the energy storage system is a “super-hybrid” battery that combines cells with NCM and LFP chemistries. The two electric motors in the BEV version deliver a combined output of 410kW.

In contrast, the EREV version uses an 800-volt onboard system and combines a 300kW all-wheel-drive powertrain with an 80.3kWh battery. Its electric range is rated at 480km. Leapmotor claims that both versions can charge from 30 to 80 per cent in around 15 minutes.

Leapmotor has opted for a clean design with nearly square headlights, topped by a horizontal light strip. Additional features include sliding doors and a large panoramic roof. The D99 is available in five exterior colours: Photoelectric White, Liquid Silver, Chenjing Blue, Skyscape Grey, and Metallic Black. Inside, the cockpit is dominated by a large freestanding central display and a digital instrument cluster, complemented by a ceiling-mounted entertainment screen for rear passengers. Various seating configurations are also available for added flexibility.
