Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced Has Proven Once Again We Don't Own Our Games

Over the past few weeks, discussions about digital ownership have been more frequent than ever, thanks to PlayStation's announcement that it will be scrapping physical discs in 2028. If we don't get to own physical versions of our games anymore, then we need reassurances that we actually do own the digital versions of them as well.
It's not a very good time to have a DRM issue that makes a digital game completely unplayable, but that's exactly what happened with Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced over this weekend.
Ubisoft DRM Made Black Flag Resynced Unplayable
In case you missed it, Ubisoft Connect went down for a little while this weekend (thanks Kotaku), making Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced and pretty much every game the publisher has released on PC completely unplayable. To make matters worse, this only affected those that had actually purchased the game, leaving those that had pirated the game completely unaffected.
All of this is also despite the fact that Ubisoft itself promises that you only need to have an internet connection to install the game, and that the game will be playable offline after the fact. What with Ubisoft Connect having gone down, that is just flagrantly false, as it's another stark reminder that while publishers like to tell us our games belong to us, it's not necessarily true.
Digital ownership is more important than ever, and even though many are turning to PCs to stick it to PlayStation and jump to the superior digital storefronts, it's always worth remembering that PC has its issues too.
