College Football 27: Best Starting Mental Abilities in RTG
Road to Glory in College Football 27 is like a sports-themed RPG experience, and your progress really depends on how you build your character before starting their career. With so many different customization options in the character creation menu, you might want to know the best ability for each category in College Football 27, which we have listed for you right here.
Best Mental Abilities in College Football 27

Mental Abilities are passive buffs that you equip for your character, but they are not activated right off the bat. Three branches of your skills can have mental abilities: Academic, Leadership, and Brand. The progression rate and formula are different from one skill category to another.
A mental ability will sit somewhere in the middle of a skill category's progression bar. When your skill reaches that spot, the passive buff that you have assigned to that skill gets activated.
Now, it's important to know which ability is best for each category, because the progression formula makes a difference here. Obviously, you want the most beneficial mental ability to be tied to the easiest skill category to make progress in. This way, you will have the strongest buff activated earlier and for a longer duration.
Leadership + Clearheaded
- Protection against composure loss
To better understand the combo of this skill and mental ability, you first need to learn about composure loss. Every week on Road to Glory, you earn energy points, and you will need to allocate these points to five different activities, including the three main skills. Whenever a week comes to an end, the progression bars for these activities receive a minor reduction, known as composure loss.
Leadership features the easiest skill progression as it comes with less composure loss compared to Brand and Academics skills. On the other hand, Clearheaded is the strongest mental ability because it makes you immune to composure loss.
So, when your career begins, try to invest most of your energy points in Leadership until you unlock Clearheaded. This way, you will not lose progression going forward, making it easier to maintain a high rating in the other skills and activities.
Academics + Adrenaline
- Improves in-game recovery from wear and tear when off the field
The Academics mental ability works with your overall GPA rating rather than the progression bar itself. Simply put, you have two progression bars for Academics, and on two occasions throughout a season, the first progression bar's status will impact the GPA rating. So, to activate Adrenaline, you actually need to study throughout the season to increase your GPA during the exams.
Academics also have one more drawback. It resets at the beginning of every new season. This makes it more energy-hungry to progress every time you begin a new season. The worst part is that when it resets, it goes all the way back to zero, unless you score a very high GPA in the previous season, which resets it to the middle of the progression bar.
We suggest pairing Adrenaline with Academics because it's the third most beneficial mental ability on the list. It's difficult to have it activated early, as you would at least need to wait until Week 6 to potentially increase your GPA and unlock the mental ability's buff.
That said, Adrenaline will help you prevent injuries to some degree when you are the key player of the team.
Brand + Fan Favorite / Road Dog
- Fan Favorite: Increased composure gains at home
- Road Dog: Increased composure gains on the road
Brand is also an ability like Leadership. The difference is that it takes more time to go higher in the progression bar for the Brand, as you need to spend more energy to make the same amount of progress as Leadership. The loss of composure in Brand is less punishing, especially if you continuously spend energy on it and sign sponsorship contracts.
Speaking of their paired mental abilities, Fan Favorite and Road Dog are the exact opposite of each other in what they do, but the result is quite similar. So, it's up to you and your player to pick one of them. The composure gained from both mental abilities is the same.

They're Not the Best, But Here's What They Can Do
Other Mental Abilities can be useful in the right situation, so we'll talk about the remaining ones here:
Rollercoaster is more like a lottery. You can make composure loss or gain more volatile, but with a limited source of energy, you will eventually see some big losses, and that could be hard to recover from.
Best Friend is another situational mental ability that grants you increased composure on first-down receptions. If you are the QB and confident in your passing play, you can benefit from Best Friend more often.
Natural improves your resistance to weather impact. This is way too situational. You would only benefit from such a buff if you ever play on a snowy or rainy day, and that's something completely random. So, after you activate this ability, you will have to wait and be lucky, which is literally not worth it.
Lastly, you have Winning Time and Team Player. The former will help you in close games where the margin between you and the opponent is only a few points. This will give you composure during the late minutes of the final quarter. Similar to The Natural, Winning Time is also an ability that is way too situational to be fruitful.
Team Player is a better investment, especially for players like halfbacks, who may also appear as receivers depending on the offensive formation. This mental ability will help you play better when you are not in your main position.
