Game Of Thrones: War For Westeros Delayed Until 2027, But It Looks Promising
Previously, he's interviewed breakout indie developers, broken big news stories, reviewed massive releases and recounted his time living as a humble woodsman in Oblivion.
A lifelong gamer, Jack is primarily interested in RPGs and narrative experiences. He's also been playing League of Legends for a decade, unfortunately.
An RTS or 'map painter' set in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF) seems like a no-brainer—we've seen how popular the Westerosi mod for Crusader Kings 3 is—and PlaySide is trying to give the people what they want.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros was announced in 2025 with a dramatic CGI cinematic that pitted Kit Harington's Jon Snow against the Night King. I wouldn't expect those visuals in the final game, but I'd be happy with any functional adaptation of Westeros at this point.
War For Westeros Delayed Until 2027
In a recent development blog post, PlaySide revealed some of the progress that has been made on War for Westeros over the last year, with a specific focus on the leaders of the game's various factions and 'trump card' units.
Given that Jon Snow leads House Stark and the announcement cinematic, you would assume War for Westeros is a pseudo-adaptation of the final season of HBO's A Game of Thrones.
However, since Tywin leads the Lannisters, we'll probably get a mishmash of Westerosi factions during various periods in the timeline instead. Also mentioned in the post are House Targaryen (presumably led by Daenerys, given the presence of Drogon in one of the screenshots) and the Night King's army, led by the man himself.
These 'hero' units have special abilities that power up allied units in an area-of-effect around them. PlaySide is focusing heavily on the micromanagement of units in battle; something that's not always a given in the genre. We also get a glimpse of 'trump card' units like House Stark's giants, which launch squads of infantry into the air with their mighty clubs.
The post also highlights some of the map design principles employed in War for Westeros, which aims to authentically recreate the Westerosi landscape while allowing for visual clarity on maps. The example given is Ashemark, a 1v1 map situated in the Westerlands. The map has several open lanes for players to occupy, allowing them to apply constant pressure to their opponent throughout the game.
Unfortunately for people excited by these developments, War of Westeros has been delayed.
"Lastly, we wanted to close with an update to our planned release window," the blog reads. "War for Westeros will now launch in early 2027." The RTS was originally intended to release in 2026.
"We remain unwavering in our mission to deliver a real-time strategy game set in the world of Westeros that meets the expectations of both RTS players and Game of Thrones fans. This decision gives us the time needed to continue building towards that goal and ensure that the game reaches the high level of quality we are aiming for," the blog concludes.
