Riot Addresses Everyone's Complaints About League Classic
Previously, he's interviewed breakout indie developers, broken big news stories, reviewed massive releases and recounted his time living as a humble woodsman in Oblivion.
A lifelong gamer, Jack is primarily interested in RPGs and narrative experiences. He's also been playing League of Legends for a decade, unfortunately.
League of Legends Classic—pitched as a return to how League was played over 10 years ago—has been on the game's Public Beta Environment (PBE) for a few days, and the feedback hasn't been very positive.
A common complaint is that the mode isn't nostalgic enough, because, rather than singling out a single period in time and reverting the game to that state, Riot has instead created a 'best of' amalgamation of mechanics and champion kits from League's first five seasons. That's not inherently bad, though I (and others) would argue Season 5 feels too 'new' to be included in a Classic mode — that's the season where modern League began to take shape.
The mishmash of time periods has created a situation where some champions feel truly classic, while others, like Ahri, aren't dramatically different from how they play today. There is also some criticism about which version of certain champions are present in League Classic, e.g. Riot added Season 1 Katarina, but Season 3 Katarina feels like her 'true' classic version to some.
Riot Is Adjusting League Classic In Response To Feedback
The most vitriolic complaints are in relation to Riot deciding to include old champion models as purchasable skins, essentially pay-walling some of that nostalgic factor. This is the first thing developer Brian "FeralPony" Feeney announced is being scrapped in a recently released update video, which addresses several of the community's concerns.
These old models will now be unlocked by default, and Riot is working to add an older model to every champion to preserve some of that nostalgia. Feeney assures us that most are coming soon, but some will take a bit longer.
A massive change is that the 'window' of League Classic is being moved from Seasons 1 through 5 to Seasons 1 through 3. A lot of the feedback insisted that Season 5 was too 'new' for a Classic mode, and so champion kits are being reverted to what Riot perceives as their most iconic state from the first three years of League.
However, a couple of modern concepts will remain in the game, such as baron-empowered minions, which were added to stop games from dragging on for over an hour.
Riot hasn't fixed everything—some would prefer to play Season 3 with no modern quality-of-life changes at all, and on the old map—but the quick turnaround from the development team has impressed many within the community.
