Anyone who knows English could soon build apps, thanks to AI: Dheeraj Pandey
DevRev CEO Dheeraj Pandey believes artificial intelligence is democratising software development by allowing anyone who can communicate in English to build applications, creating a significant opportunity for India's large English-speaking workforce.

Artificial intelligence could dramatically expand the number of people capable of building software, with DevRev CEO and Nutanix co-founder Dheeraj Pandey saying English is emerging as the new programming language and could increase the global developer base tenfold.
Speaking exclusively to CNBC-TV18, Pandey said AI is lowering barriers to software creation and opening up opportunities for countries like India, which have a large English-speaking workforce.
He argued that the traditional model, where a relatively small number of developers wrote instructions for machines on behalf of billions of users, is undergoing a fundamental shift.
“One could argue that the world used to have 50 million developers, and eight billion people depended on them to instruct machines. That 50 million could become half a billion because the new programming language is English,” he said.
Pandey said India is particularly well placed to benefit from this transition because of its demographic profile and language advantage.
“I’m an optimist on India. I’ve always been. There’s a young workforce that knows how to be Darwinistic, which means finding its own way,” he said.
According to him, concerns around the impact of AI on India’s IT and IT-enabled services sector are overstated. While disruption and job dislocation are inevitable, he believes workers will adapt and create new opportunities for themselves.
“There are a lot of doomsayers asking what happens to IT and IT-enabled services. There will be some disruption and dislocation, but individuals who are CEOs of their own careers will figure it out because they’re part of a billion-plus Anglosphere world and they speak English,” Pandey said.
He added that AI will enable people to move “mentally five times faster”, much like automobiles enabled humans to travel faster than horse-drawn carriages.
Pandey also sees a supportive environment for India over the next few years, driven by overseas demand.
“Europe and maybe even Japan offer a saving grace for India. Ageing economies can’t introduce robots and agents fast enough. Until then, there is a gap that India has to fill, and we’d better figure out our course after five years,” he said.
The DevRev chief said countries and industries that rely heavily on physical operations are likely to adopt AI at a slower pace than software-driven businesses, creating a transition period that could benefit India.
For Pandey, AI represents an opportunity rather than a threat. He believes the technology could create more programmers in India than ever before and help elevate workers to higher-value tasks as machines take over repetitive chores.
