OpenAI is now more flexible to strike deals with rivals of Microsoft, including Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud. The recent renegotiation of their pact that allowed Microsoft to exclusively sell services linked to OpenAI’s models, has now opened new doors of opportunities for the Sam Altman-led AI company. Altman on Monday, April 27, took to his X account to claim that the ChatGPT-maker has updated its partnership with Microsoft.
While Microsoft will continue to remain the startup’s primary cloud partner, OpenAI will now be able to make its products and services available across all cloud platforms. Altman said that OpenAI will continue licensing its technology to Microsoft through 2032, while the revenue-sharing arrangement between the two will remain in place until 2030.

Under the renegotiated terms, OpenAI will reportedly gain access to more computing power and added room to scale its enterprise business. This will likely strengthen its position against rivals such as Anthropic. Microsoft, in turn, will secure greater visibility into future revenue, while OpenAI benefits from increased operational flexibility.
Notably, the revised terms remove a clause that would have allowed OpenAI to stop payments to Microsoft upon reaching artificial general intelligence (AGI).
