Port of LA launches $75m e-truck incentive

The Port of Los Angeles has opened a $75 million funding programme to support the deployment of battery-electric Class 8 drayage trucks. Eligible operators can receive up to $300,000 per vehicle as the port seeks to accelerate the transition to zero-emission freight transport.

The Zero-Emission Truck Purchasing Incentive Project is open to Licensed Motor Carriers (LMCs) registered in the Port Drayage Truck Registry. Under the programme, applicants must propose the purchase of at least ten battery-electric Class 8 drayage trucks. The port will provide incentives of up to $300,000 per vehicle, with individual carriers eligible for awards of up to $24 million.

The available funding combines $50 million from the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Ports Program with an additional $25 million from the Port of Los Angeles’ Clean Truck Fund Rate. The port said the funds have been specifically earmarked for the deployment of battery-electric drayage vehicles serving port operations.

The Port of Los Angeles is currently accepting proposals from eligible operators. Questions related to the request for proposals can be submitted until 20 July, while final applications must be received by 3 December.

According to the port, the programme will contribute to a broader investment package of more than $600 million in grant and matching funds. These projects are intended to support the port’s objective of achieving ‘100% ZE terminal operations’ while also fostering ‘high-quality jobs and public engagement’.
