Indian Bank to hire 20 AI experts over next 5-6 months to accelerate AI, cybersecurity initiatives: MD Binod Kumar

Chennai based public sector lender Indian Bank is planning to recruit around 20 AI specialists as part of its technology expansion strategy, with the hiring process expected to conclude over the next five to six months, Managing Director & CEO Binod Kumar said.

"We are also going for hiring of some AI experts, around 20," Kumar told ETBFSI, adding that recruitment will be carried out through a public advertisement followed by a selection process.

"It takes around five to six months. We will go for advertisement, then they will apply, then some written or recruitment test will happen," he said.

The AI professionals will work across multiple strategic functions including cybersecurity, risk management, Know Your Customer (KYC) processes and improving the ease of banking through greater AI adoption.

"Cyber will be one area. Then how we can make more effective use of AI, how we can improve ease of doing banking. Risk management, KYC etc. All these factors will be covered," Kumar said.

Alongside AI hiring, the lender is also strengthening its cybersecurity function by recruiting additional IT professionals with expertise in coding and cyber technologies.

The hiring comes as Indian Bank significantly expands its digital and AI capabilities. According to its FY26 Annual Report, the bank deployed advanced analytics and AI/ML models across MSME underwriting, fraud prevention, early warning systems and collections to strengthen risk management and improve operational efficiency.

Indian Bank reported that its digital business rose to Rs 2.72 lakh crore, while the number of digital journeys, utilities and processes increased to 153.
