Demon Slayer Officially Lines Up New Nichirin Sword Power Up For The Hashira
This article details events for the Demon Slayer Manga’s final arc.
Demon Slayer introduced us to its final saga in the anime form through its most recent movie, titled Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Part 1 - Akaza’s Return. This movie served as an entry point into the last stretch of the story, but there's a lot more content to come still. Demon Slayer is returning with two new movie installments, currently referred to by fans as Infinity Castle Part 2 and 3.
We're all extremely excited to see the upcoming battles, especially when it comes to the Hashira, who constitute the strongest battle force of the Demon Slayer Corps. The next big Hashira battles are officially set to be against Kokushibo and Muzan. To combat their strength, the Hashira will need massive power-ups. The author of Demon Slayer, Koyoharu Gotoge, has already established incredible power-ups for them, with the ultimate Nichirin Blade upgrade, known as the Bright Red Nichirin. Gyomei, Sanemi, Muichiro, Obanai, and Giyu are all about to tap into this power soon.
Demon Slayer Infinity Castle Part 2 & 3 Will Power Up The Hashira With Bright Red Nichirin Swords
The first Demon Slayer Infinity Castle movie was released in July 2025. Since then, we've been waiting for new updates pertaining to the upcoming two movies, but so far, nothing has been revealed to us. Regardless, the project is definitely in production, and we anticipate these movies to come out sometime in 2027 and 2029, respectively. Demon Slayer’s upcoming releases will bring forward even bigger challenges for our heroes. Notably, we're waiting for the battle against Upper Rank 1 Kokushibo, as well as the battle against the Demon King himself, Muzan.
To combat them, the Hashira have quite a few power-ups lined up already, but we're especially excited to see the Bright Red Nichirin Sword in action in their hands. In Infinity Castle Part 2, Gyomei, Sanemi, and Muichiro are all set up to unlock this power in the battle against Kokushibo. In Infinity Castle Part 3, Obanai and Giyu will tap into it to deal damage to Muzan, and all these events will be a delight for us to witness.
How Muichiro, Gyomei, and Sanemi Tap Gain Bright Red Nichirin Swords Vs Kokushibo
While we were all impressed by the strength and power of Upper Rank 2 Doma and Upper Rank 3 Akaza, the strongest underling of Muzan has yet to make his entrance. Upper Rank 1 Kokushibo is a monstrous Demon possessing a powerful Blood Demon Art in conjunction with Moon Breathing, a brand-new type that is about to be revealed in the movie. Because of his abilities and rapid regeneration, Kokushibo will be the hardest fight yet for the Hashira, specifically for Muichiro, Sanemi, and Gyomei.
In the manga, this fight was spectacularly illustrated by Gotouge, and we could see that despite them fighting well, they were, up until a certain point, unable to deal any deadly damage to Kokushibo. Meanwhile, the latter kept getting stronger, and shockingly, he was even able to regenerate from a beheading, which, for most Demons, is a lethal blow that they don't come back from.
It goes without saying that Kokushibo wielded freakish powers, and to win over him, in a moment of pure determination, the Hashira finally upgraded. In Demon Slayer Chapter 175, which was released on September 21, 2019, in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #43, Muichiro, the youngest of the lot, through pure pressure on his Nichirin Blade, was able to awaken the Bright Red Sword. Muichiro then went on to stab Kokushibo with it, which caused excruciating pain to the Demon. With that moment of distraction, Gyomei and Sanemi put their forces together, and in the same Chapter 175, the two ended up clashing their weapons, heating them and causing their swords to become bright red. With their Bright Red weapons activated, they were finally able to behead Kokushibo once more, and this time, for good.
Obanai And Giyu Will Officially Gain The Bright Red Nichirin Sword Against Muzan
Kokushibo could not have been defeated without the acquisition of the Bright Red Nichirin Blades by the 3 Hashira that fought him head-on. However, the Hashira will need this sword upgrade once more in the final movie, which will see them take on the ultimate enemy who is far stronger than Kokushibo, the King of Demons himself, Kibutsuji Muzan. In the final movie, Muzan is heavily nerfed as he is impacted by the anti-Muzan drug, which slows down his regeneration. Despite that, he still stands as the greatest among all Demons. Muzan regenerated so fast that even a slice through his neck would immediately heal itself as if nothing had happened to him.
In his case, the Hashira's goal was not to kill the Demon with their sword. Instead, they were looking for every way possible to stall him until dawn and let the light deal with him. That's not to say that the Hashira didn't fight an exciting battle against him. More Hashira unlock the Bright Red Sword against him, and among them is the fan favorite Obanai. Obanai, just like Muichiro, unlocked this upgrade by putting pressure on his sword after he acquired his Demon Slayer Mark in Demon Slayer chapter 189, released in WSJ Double Issue #6-7 on January 3, 2020. The pressure used to activate the Red Sword officially boosts his strength and allows him to slice Muzan’s arms off. At the same time, he also gives Gyomei and Sanemi an opening to reactivate their Bright Red weapons as well.
In Demon Slayer chapter 190, we will also see Giyu tap into the Bright Red Sword with the help of Sanemi. As Sanemi and Giyu clash their weapons, Giyu’s blade awakens. Giyu is also able to tap momentarily into the Bright Red Sword through Tanjiro’s Blade. The two then do their part to hold back Muzan in Demon Slayer Chapter 199 until the sun rises in the final stretch of the battle.
Why The Bright Red Nichirin Sword Is The Ultimate Blade Power Up In Demon Slayer
The Bright Red Nichirin is undoubtedly the ultimate power-up any sword user can achieve in Demon Slayer. It must be said, however, that this power-up does not permanently change the sword. Instead, it's temporary, but a Demon Slayer can tap into it multiple times if they know how to activate it through pressure, friction, or ignition.
“His blade reddens? What is this?! My body is stiffening!! It hurts!! It’s like my insides are on fire! The technique won’t come out! Is it the tree sprouting from me?! The trunk must be growing by drinking my blood! And this pain! It’s making my body so stiff! It’s because of that red tinged sword! A red blade… just like Yoriichi’s…” Kokushibo after being stabbed by Muichiro’s Bright Red Nichirin in Demon Slayer chapter 175
The Bright Red Nichirin is strong due to its resemblance to the bright flame of the sun. Yoriichi’s own blade was naturally bright red. As such, this bright sword inflicts the most damage to a Demon. Being stabbed with a Bright Red Sword is extremely painful and burns their insides. It also greatly impacts their regeneration, which is a must-have in the final arcs where the Demons can even regenerate their own heads.
Unfortunately, the only Hashira present during the Muzan battle who was not able to tap into the Bright Red Nichirin was Mitsuri. She did not use any of the ultimate powers of the Demon Slayers during the final battle, and that can simply be explained by the author sidelining her through this high-stakes fight.
All the chapters of Demon Slayer, by Gotouge, are available to read via Manga Plus and Viz Media.
