There's a very good reason Edgar Markov is one of the most heavily played Magic: The Gathering Commanders, and you'll soon find that out for yourself when building a deck around the Vampire lord.

Edgar Markov is currently the second most-played Commander according to EDHRecs, with over 48,000 decks built around him. Given that he is one of just five Eminence Commanders in Magic and that this ability is among the most powerful the game has ever seen, it becomes pretty obvious why he is so beloved.

I'm going to take you through an example deck I've built, while also going into detail on why Edgar Markov is so good, the typical value found in decks built around him, and some of the key cards you need in any deck he leads.

Commander Overview

Edgar markov Innistrad Remastered.

Edgar Markov is a six-mana (1B, 1R, 1W, 3C) Vampire Knight with Eminence, meaning his ability triggers from the Command zone and on the battlefield. Whenever you cast another Vampire spell, Edgar Markov creates a 1/1 Vampire creature token.

But that's not all; Markov is a 4/4 with First Strike and Haste, and also puts a +1/+1 counter on each Vampire you control whenever he attacks.

If you take Eminence away from Edgar Markov, the card isn't nearly as effective, but the fact that he can sit in your Command Zone all game and just churn out tokens that you can power up makes him a remarkably deadly Commander. Whenever I come up against Edgar Markov, he typically doesn't even hit the battlefield until well after turn six, because players tend to build up dangerous board states before bringing him out. They then swing wide and tall with all their creatures for lethal damage, forcing players to take action or risk being out of the game.

Benefits Of An Eminence Commander

If it isn't already obvious, the primary benefit of an Eminence Commander is that its ability triggers whether it is on the battlefield or in the Command Zone. Not all Eminence Commanders are as powerful as Edgar Markov, but the mechanic is among the most devastating in all of Magic: The Gathering, which is why it's only been printed on five cards so far.

Below is an example deck list for Edgar Markov. Given that this card and the Eminence ability lean heavily into a tribal base, there are plenty of Vampire creature spells and ways to boost those creatures' power and toughness.

Key Cards & Combos

Bloodthirsty Conqueror MTG card.

There are so many powerful cards to choose from that it's hard to identify the absolute non-negotiable inclusions for an Edgar Markov Commander deck. However, I've picked out four that are up there as the best from my experience playing with Markov as a Commander.

Vito, Thorn Of The Dusk Rose

Vito is already an Orzhov Lifegain staple, but fits ever so nicely into any Edgar Markov deck too, because he is a Vampire Cleric creature type. A three-mana (2B, 1C) 1/3, Vito takes any life you gain and has a target opponent lose that much life.

As a self-servicing mana ability, you can pay five mana (2B, 3C) to give all your creatures Lifelink until the end of the turn. Given the volume of tokens you'd expect to create, and the ways you can boost their power and toughness, getting a Vito on the battlefield and managing to activate his ability is effectively a game-ender for an opponent, with each turn you're allowed to swing freely.

Teferi's Protection

A three-mana spell that protects you and all your creatures from any kind of damage at instant speed in Commander is pretty ridiculous. It's exactly why Teferi's Protection has become a staple for any creature-heavy deck featuring white mana.

Vampiric Tutor

Tutoring cards is powerful at the best of times, but done at instant speed to set you up for your next turn for just one mana and two life is one of the strongest ways to get your game-changing cards in hand without revealing them to your opponents.

Bloodthirsty Conqueror

Part of many an infinite combo, Bloodthirsty Conqueror is a five-mana (2B, 3C) 5/5 with Flying and Deathtouch who, whenever an opponent loses life, you gain that much life.

Getting this creature on the battlefield can swing games almost immediately, especially if you have a good creature base built up and some open targets to aim at.

It even has great synergy with other cards in the template deck, such as Bloodletter of Aclazotz, Cruel Celebrant, and Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose.

Value

Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose MTG.

Due to the popularity and sheer power of Edgar Markov, the value of the most effective cards that pair with him has spiked in value over time. This means the template deck above is worth $776.87, which is quite unreasonable and amounts to an average cost per card of over $77.

While I did try to choose some slightly fringe cards rather than just pack the deck with Edgar Markov staples, the value is still incredibly unreasonable. Now, if you have a ton of bulk from years gone by, you may find some of these cards lying around, but there's still a reasonable investment required to build a truly powerful Edgar Markov Commander deck.

The land base is another easy way to reduce the cost of Commander decks right now, as so many lands have steadily risen in price over the last few years that if you want to run mostly non-basics, it's going to take up a huge portion of your budget.
