JSW MG Motor India Builds One Platform to Power Every Kind of Electric Future

With MG ADAPT, the OEM is positioning itself to offer a broad spectrum of NEW options from a single, future-ready platform — reducing development time, improving consistency across products, and giving customers greater choice without compromise.

JSW MG Motor India has unveiled MG ADAPT — Advance Drive Architecture Platform Technology — positioning it as India’s first multi New Energy Vehicle platform capable of supporting electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and range extender electric vehicles on a single intelligent architecture.

The is the most significant technology announcement the company has made since its formation as a joint venture between JSW and SAIC in March 2024. The first product on the platform will be an SUV, Mr. Anurag Mehrotra, Managing Director of JSW MG Motor India, revealed at a roundtable after the unveil, though the platform is capable of supporting multiple body styles including sedans.

For a company that already has the Windsor — India’s best-selling EV — a charging ecosystem with over 35,000 accessible points, and a Battery-as-a-Service model that the industry has since followed, MG ADAPT is the foundation on which the next chapter will be built.

One Solution for Multiple Customer Segments

The launch is rooted in a clear-eyed reading of where the global and Indian automotive markets are heading. New energy vehicles now account for 33% of global sales, up from 23% just two years ago, and the shift is being driven not by one technology but by the entire new energy ecosystem growing together. In India, EV penetration crossed 8% in June 2026 alone — a record high — and the government is targeting 30% by 2030.

But the more important insight behind MG ADAPT is about the Indian buyer. The vehicle maker has identified three distinct customer types — early adopters who want the latest EV technology, pragmatists who want electric efficiency without giving up the freedom to refuel anywhere, and traditionalists who want to transition gradually. Building separate platforms for each of these groups is inefficient, and that MG ADAPT solves that by offering one platform with multiple powertrain options, Mr. Mehrotra said.

MG ADAPT has been designed as a modular architecture that integrates multiple electrified propulsion technologies within a common framework, allowing for faster product development while focusing on improved driving range, fast-charging capability, enhanced efficiency, stronger performance, better safety, and superior driving refinement.

At the core of the platform’s hybrid system is an integrated technology ecosystem comprising four key components — a dedicated hybrid engine built for higher thermal efficiency and lower fuel consumption, a dedicated battery system for instant electric response, a first-in-India 10-in-1 Intelligent Electric Drive Unit that simplifies system complexity while improving performance, and the world’s first Electromagnetic Dedicated Hybrid Transmission for seamless power delivery. An intelligent energy management system ties all four together, automatically selecting between four drive modes depending on conditions: Pure Electric Drive for silent urban travel, Series Hybrid Drive where the engine generates electricity while the motor powers the wheels, Parallel Hybrid Drive for maximum performance, and Engine Direct Drive for efficient highway cruising.

Integrated Technology Ecosystem

According to Mr. Manish Manek, Chief VLE and Head PE at JSW MG Motor India, the platform supports three distinct technologies, each designed for a different kind of buyer. For the pragmatist, there is a Plug-in Hybrid system built around a dedicated hybrid engine with 43.2% thermal efficiency, a 10-in-1 Intelligent Drive Unit, and the world’s first Electromagnetic Dedicated Hybrid Transmission that switches drive modes in just 0.1 seconds.

For the buyer who wants an electric driving experience but needs confidence on long journeys, the Range Extender Electric Vehicle keeps the wheels always driven by the electric motor, with a petrol engine acting purely as a generator to recharge the battery when needed — delivering an electric-first driving experience while significantly extending range. For the traditionalist who wants better fuel efficiency without changing habits, the Hybrid Electric Vehicle blends engine and motor automatically — no charging, no new routines, just a smarter drive, Mr. Manek added.

Mr. Mehrotra said, the company plans to invest ₹3,000 to 4,000 crores in the near term across three areas — new products, localisation, and plant expansion. Localisation is a clear priority, with the company targeting 70% local content across all new products on the MG ADAPT platform, up from around 60% on existing models. Battery cells and a small number of proprietary technology components will continue to be imported, but everything else is being brought in-house or sourced locally, with battery assembly already underway at the company’s Halol plant.

The platform’s 400 and 800-volt architecture is another differentiator — no other vehicle in comparable price segments in India currently offers 800-volt charging, which enables significantly faster charge times. With NEVs currently at around 8% to 9% of the Indian market, the company sees 92% of the market still to be captured, and believes the way to accelerate adoption is to bring more models at more price points, giving consumers genuine choice rather than competing in a market share race.

Mr. Mehrotra said, “We believe the future of mobility lies in giving customers the freedom to choose the energy solution that best suits their lifestyle, without compromising on performance, efficiency or driving experience. MG ADAPT marks a defining milestone in our NEV journey and reflects our commitment to bringing globally advanced technologies that are relevant to the evolving needs of Indian customers. As we continue to expand our NEV portfolio, this platform will serve as the technological backbone of our future products and reinforce our commitment to accelerating sustainable mobility in India.”
