MOIA launches autonomous ride-pooling service in Hamburg
The trial forms part of the ALIKE project, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport. The initiative aims to demonstrate how autonomous on-demand services can complement existing public transport networks.
At launch, the vehicles will operate in selected areas of Winterhude, Barmbek and Wandsbek. Rides will initially be offered free of charge, while a safety driver remains on board. The project envisages deploying up to ten autonomous ID. Buzz vehicles.
For its operations, MOIA uses its own technology platform, which integrates the ID. Buzz AD, Mobileye’s automated driving system, fleet management, and operational processes into a single solution. In the long term, this platform will also be made available to public transport organisations and private fleet operators. All details about the ALIKE project can be found here.
The Hamburg trial serves as the foundation for MOIA’s international growth strategy. As recently as April, the company announced a partnership with US provider Beep to build a fleet of up to 5,000 autonomous shuttle vehicles for public transport over the next ten years. In parallel, MOIA is preparing further pilot projects in Germany, Norway, and the USA. The insights gained in Hamburg will help scale the technology for additional markets.
Regulatory frameworks are also evolving in tandem. With the recently adopted UNECE regulation for fully autonomous driving systems, internationally harmonised safety requirements are being established for the first time. Projects like ALIKE are intended to provide the practical experience necessary for the future regular operation of autonomous mobility services.
