It's been a quiet couple of years for Dungeons & Dragons — since the release of the 2024 5e rules revision (often referred to as 5.5e), official releases have been sparse, and several senior designers have departed Wizards of the Coast.

However, that could be changing. The publication of a dedicated roadmap for this year's releases, along with a significantly increased presence at this year's Gen Con, suggests Wizards of the Coast could be ready to shine the spotlight back on Dungeons & Dragons.

Dungeons & Dragons Will Have A Massive Presence At Gen Con

Indiana Reportory Theatre, the venue for D&D Tower during Gen Con 2026.

Wizards has booked the Indiana Repertory, a sizeable theatre near the Gen Con venue, and dubbed it 'D&D Tower' for the weekend. The 'Tower' will host panels, live plays, a live episode of 'Dungeon Masters', and tutorials. Generally, you don't invest so much time and money in something unless you're trying to garner a lot of attention for a big announcement or two.

Dungeon Masters is an actual play show created by Wizards of the Coast to showcase upcoming Dungeons & Dragons content. It's hosted by Jasmine Bhullar, and features Neil Newbon, Devora Wilde, Christian Navarro and Mayanna Berrin.

The most important event will undoubtedly be the D&D Vision Keynote 2027, hosted by Baldur's Gate 3's Theo Solomon (Wyll). According to the event's synopsis, Wizards plans to "unveil the future of Dungeons & Dragons with roadmap reveals, first looks, special guests, and surprises that will define what comes next for the game."

That's quite the promise, and could mean a variety of things for the immediate future of Dungeons & Dragons. We'll undoubtedly get a couple of book reveals and a roadmap for next year, but could there be something major happening? There have long been rumours of a revival of the Dark Sun setting brewing at Wizards, but would that be a crowd pleaser?

It's difficult to match the verbiage of a press release with the reality of an announcement, but Wizards of the Coast hasn't made a habit of overpromising with Dungeons & Dragons. In fact, the company usually undersells upcoming releases, so there's every chance we actually are getting a couple of massive announcements at Gen Con.

In addition to the keynote, approximately 30 events are happening at D&D Tower throughout the convention weekend, with plenty of special guest appearances. The cast of Dungeon Masters will be present, as will Felicia Day, Ginny Di, Luke Gygax, Matthew Lillard, Matt Mercer, and more.

After a few years when the brand seemed to be in decline, this year's Gen Con could be the beginning of a new era for Dungeons & Dragons.
