It's been over a decade since The Guild—a comedy web show centred around a guild of MMORPG players—released its last season. The show was inspired by Felicia Day's addiction to World of Warcraft, which motivated her to write a sitcom-style series about a group of guild members navigating challenges both in and out of the game.

The show was warmly received and ended up running for six seasons. The success of the show coincided with the launch of Geek & Sundry, a production company founded by Day that notably hosted Critical Role for several years. Day would go on to become a household name in gaming circles, including an appearance as a companion character in Dragon Age 2.

The Guild Will Return

Recently, the actress, writer and streamer was playing games with cast members of The Guild, and was struck with inspiration on a potential reboot. In fact, Day revealed to Wargamer that she even received offers from Hollywood, but ultimately turned them down.

"They were like, 'Yeah we'd love to reboot the show with younger actors', And I was so angry. I was so angry, and then and there, I was like 'No, Hollywood. You suck! You've rejected me for 20 years, and now you want to take my baby away from me? Absolutely not! I am going to make this movie on my own terms, and the fans are going to help me,'" Day revealed.

Instead of accepting an offer from a Hollywood production company, Day and her team are planning to launch a Kickstarter to crowdfund a reunion movie featuring the original cast.

A younger generation of MMORPG players is certainly one of the angles to take for a potential reboot of The Guild, but those attached to the original characters will likely enjoy a look at their lives 10–15 years into the future far more.

The landscape of MMOs has changed; the genre doesn't have the same cultural capital it did in the early 2000s, and Day understands this.

"I thought long and hard about how to make it relevant for today, and you will be happy, I promise. And that's all I'm going to say about it. I acknowledge that the times have changed, and the characters have changed too. So what happens will be pleasing to everybody, and very current," she says.

The Guild: Reunion Movie's crowdfunding campaign begins on July 20.
