Pets in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced may not serve any purpose besides being adorable, but that's a good enough reason to adopt them. Even after slaughtering a few dozen soldiers on a pirating mission, it's surprisingly wholesome to watch Edward Kenway cuddle with his little monkey friend.

If you'd like to have a cat or monkey aboard the Jackdaw, here's how to get a pet in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced.

How to get a pet in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced

To obtain a pet in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, you must either claim a special reward or complete a local event. Once you've unlocked a pet, go to Edward's inventory and click the "pets" tab in the bottom right to equip it. You can only have one active pet.

Don't expect too much from your pet, though, as they mainly serve as a decorative ship feature. Rather than follow you around, they will stay on the Jackdaw, where they only appear on deck when Edward takes the wheel. If you'd like to cuddle your pet, visit Edward's cabin, where the active pet is found sitting on a drawer next to his desk. The active pet will also appear in the inventory menu's background.

Here's an overview of every pet currently available in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced and how to claim them. While the first four pets may be claimed for free, beware that the final four are part of downloadable content packs, which means you'll have to spend additional money (on top of the base game) to claim them.

Soot the Cat	Cat	Complete the "Cat Distribution System" local event in Great Inagua. Climb the rooftop at coordinates (819, 441) and simply pet the cat to complete this event.
Albert the Monkey	Monkey	Complete the "Monkey Business" local event in Havana. Defeat the sailors aboard the ship in the southeast, at coordinates (225, 568), and interact with the monkey to complete this event.
Dark Animus Familiar	Monkey	This is the first "Eye in the Dark" animus reward. Open the Animus menu, activate "Eye in the Dark," and obtain 600 data fragments to unlock the monkey. Data fragments are rewards for completing anomaly missions, and one successful mission is likely enough to get at least 600 fragments.
Shipmate Monkey	Monkey	Claim it on Ubisoft's website using this code: ASC-BFR-PMK-000. Beware that this code may eventually expire, so it's best to redeem it as soon as possible.
Gold Tom	Cat	Gold Tom is included in the Master Assassin Naval Pack, which is also part of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced's Deluxe Edition. If you purchased this edition, you can equip Gold Tom as the Jackdaw's pet at the start of the game, with no extra steps required.
Ashes	Cat	Purchase the Hellfire Naval Pack.
Sea Monkey	Monkey	Purchase the Sea Serpent Naval Pack.
Warrior Monkey	Monkey	Purchase the Dragon Storm Naval Pack.

Besides the Jackdaw pets, some of the wild and domesticated animals can be petted or fed, though you cannot keep them. They are called "friendly animals" in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced. All cats, dogs, and cows can be petted, while every turtle, chicken, and pig can be fed. You don't need to bring any food to trigger the animation. Pet or feed every species listed here, plus one of the pet monkeys, to complete the "Friend To All" achievement.
