Gege Akutami's Jujutsu Kaisen ended with the release of Volume 30 on December 25, 2024. Since then, fans have been eagerly waiting for more content from the talented mangaka. In late 2025, Gege Akutami collaborated with Yuji Iwasaki on a new project called Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo. This project ran for six months before eventually reaching its conclusion with the release of Chapter 25 on March 9, 2026.

While Gege Akutami prepares for his return, Japan has already found the perfect successor to his manga, which is currently ongoing and enjoying a massive war arc of its own, similar to Jujutsu Kaisen's Shinjuku Showdown arc. This new manga is none other than Kagurabachi, and what makes it the conclusive JJK successor is the fact that its author, Takeru Hokazono, draws direct inspiration from Gege Akutami and his stunning work Jujutsu Kaisen.

Kagurabachi's New Seitei War Arc Confirms It As The True Jujutsu Kaisen Successor

Kagurabachi New Seitei War Arc Jujutsu Kaisen Successor

On March 2, 2026, Takeru Hokazono's Kagurabachi marked the release of Chapter 113, and with it, the second part of the manga officially began. It started with the coverage of the Seitei War arc. This war arc is one of the most beloved arcs in the entirety of the series so far, and one that delivers action and impact on the same level as Jujutsu Kaisen. Simply put, the Seitei War arc is directly tied to the Datenseki, which was discovered in Japan 22 years ago and is what holds together the entire plot line of the series. This Seitei War arc is one that fans have been wanting to see for a very long time, especially because it covers the life of one of the most important characters in the entire series, Kunishige Rokuhira, whose death we are made aware of at the very beginning of the series.

“Every morning when I wash my face and look in the mirror, I see this scar, and I remember that day. So every day, I start the morning with fresh hatred.” — Chihiro, Kagurabachi Chapter #1

Chihiro's story continues on its own, but more context was always required in regards to the creation of the Enchanted Blades and the Datenseki, which Rokuhira eventually learned to forge. As we know, this war eventually concluded with the forging of the six Enchanted Blades by Rokuhira, but how exactly these events transpired is exactly what has been covered in the ongoing arc.

War arcs of huge magnitude are a specialty of Jujutsu Kaisen, and we have already seen that unfold on various occasions, starting with the Shibuya Incident Arc, where a lot of chaos unfolded in a single night in Shibuya. At the same time, Gege Akutami outdid himself with The Culling Game, which brought sorcerers from hundreds of years ago into the present timeline and made them engage in a battle to the death. Finally, there was Shinjuku Showdown, which pitted the strongest modern sorcerer, Gojo Satoru, against the strongest sorcerer in history, Ryomen Sukuna, and followed it up with a raid. Fans love to see action every single week with new releases concerning these big arcs of Jujutsu Kaisen, and now, Kagurabachi is doing something similar with the Seitei War arc, solidifying it as a proper successor to Jujutsu Kaisen.

How Hokazono Was Inspired By Gege Akutami

Takiro Hokazono is quite a young mangaka, and as such, it is no surprise to know that he grew up in an age where some of the most famous mangaka were releasing their works weekly. Hokazono is known to be especially impressed by Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of the Naruto series, and at the same time, from the modern mangaka, he is charmed by Gege Akutami, the creator of Jujutsu Kaisen. This is something that he has stated himself in the past.

According to him, one thing that he always keeps in mind while drawing manga is to create a similar feeling to Jujutsu Kaisen, with each chapter moving incredibly fast and ending at a major moment, setting up even greater excitement and anticipation for the next. At the same time, Takeru Hokazono also wanted to be involved in the same magazine as Gege Akutami's Jujutsu Kaisen, which is a goal that he has already achieved by now.

Question: How does it feel to have a serialized Jump Manga?

Answer: I have to say I'm so honored because I grew up wanting to be a mangaka because of titles like Naruto and Jujutsu kaisen, and it's amazing to be in the same magazine as them.

According to Hokazono, after having read Jujutsu Kaisen meticulously, he intends to fasten the speed of the story and match the pace that Gege Akutami set in his own story. He believes that a faster pace sets and raises the anticipation and excitement even more, and he intends to recreate this feeling among all his readers. Naturally, it makes sense as to why the big battles feel similar to Jujutsu Kaisen in Kagurabachi, and why this new story is as beloved by Jujutsu Kaisen fans as it is.

“While drawing, I thought it might be early, but when I read Jujutsu Kaisen, I thought, ‘Wow, that’s fast!’ and then when I read Chainsaw Man, I thought, ‘As expected, that’s fast!’. I realized this is the recent sense of speed. One of the appeals of Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Kagurabachi is that I strive to keep readers engaged and actually speed things up more. Because I wanted to catch the readers’ interest, and I strongly felt the urge to introduce the masterpiece immediately,” — Takeru Hokazono

The Fate Of The Jujutsu Kaisen Franchise After Modulo

Fate Jujutsu Kaisen Franchise After Modulo

While Kagurabachi stands as a popular successor to Jujutsu Kaisen in Japan, fans are still eagerly awaiting the return of Gege Akutami and the continuation of the Jujutsu Kaisen franchise. Unfortunately, at the moment, it doesn't seem that a return for Jujutsu Kaisen is likely, and this is because Gege Akutami is not looking to continue the story further, if its comments are to be believed.

That said, Gege Akutami can always change his mind and return with another short-lived project. For what it's worth, on March 9, 2026, Gege’s editor officially stated that the author intends to continue being a part of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump in one way or another, be it with a new series or with another Jujutsu Kaisen story. Hopefully, we'll find out more information later this year. In the meantime, the fans still have the Jujutsu Kaisen anime to enjoy, which has proven to be nothing short of absolutely spectacular, and is lining up the release of the fourth season in 2027.

All the chapters of Kagurabachi and Jujutsu Kaisen are available to read via Manga Plus and Viz Media.
