PlayStation has kicked off its big summer sale, with games on the PS Store getting discounts of up to 75 percent. The sale starts today and will run until August 12, giving fans a few weeks to pick up some deals.

However, many in the gaming community have not yet forgiven PlayStation for abandoning physical media. In the replies to PlayStation's post about the sale, many are continuing to express their disgust that Sony is going all-in on digital-only gaming, and encourage fellow physical media enthusiasts to boycott PlayStation, refusing to participate in the sale.

PlayStation Fans Are Still Furious Over The Decision To Abandon Physical Media

As with all of PlayStation's recent social media posts, it's getting radio'd to hell and back. With 5.4K likes against 11K comments - almost all of which are negative - it's clear that PlayStation isn't out of the woods yet, even when it's trying to sell games cheaper.

"Why is it called 'sale' when you're only renting stuff to people instead of selling it?" says Twitter user Does It Play. "Stop deceiving people! If you want to kill physical media, be honest. Tell people you will strip things from their library whenever you feel like it. That's what your lovely EULAs say, no?"

This refers to the fact that we don't really own digital copies of games. Instead, we're handing over money for the right to play these games for as long as the publisher or platform owner allows. PlayStation itself proved this around the same time it announced that it was ditching physical games in 2028, as it also removed 500 films from its service - even if you'd previously bought them.

With that in mind, many worry about their game libraries going into the all-digital future. Sure enough, you might be able to pick up some deals in the PS Store sale this summer, but will you still be able to play them in 20 years? That might seem like a ridiculous thing to ask, but I have games I bought 20 years ago that I can boot up right now perfectly fine, and I'm sure I'm not alone in that.

In any case, the sale is on now. It will be interesting to see if enough players boycott it to make Sony feel it where it hurts.
