This past week, Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y were added to Pokemon Go for the very first time. While the initial additions came in a slightly controversial fashion, upsetting longtime players of the mobile hit, they were eventually rolled out to everybody.
The rollout of the latest Mega Evolution was via a special Timed Research, but unfortunately, it only offered players the chance to net one of its two forms. The other can be obtained in Pokemon Go, but players have realized that doing so will require walking a staggering distance.
Pokemon Go Players Will Need To Walk Forever To Get The Second Mega Mewtwo Form
Following the disappearance of the famous Mewtwo statue at the Shibuya Pokemon Center in Tokyo, players could net their first Mega Mewtwo in Pokemon Go by completing the Genetic Mastery Timed Research. The research was split, meaning players could only get Candies for either Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y, and it included a range of tasks, including catching, powering up, and Mega Evolving Pokemon, as well as hatching eggs, using TMs, and making curveball throws.
Mega Mewtwo Y, the slightly stronger of the two, retains its pure Psychic typing, while Mega Mewtwo X becomes Psychic and Fighting-type, matching Pokemon like Meditite and Medicham. The choice between the two has brought about decision paralysis for Pokedex fillers and battlers alike. Thankfully, there is a way to get the other form; it's just very arduous.
First calculated on Reddit, you'll need to walk around 1,500 km to earn enough Mega Energy to get the second Mega Mewtwo form.
After completing the Timed Research and earning your first Mega Mewtwo, you'll need a total of 7,500 Mega Energy to unlock the second. At 100 Mega Energy per 20 km, that brings you to around 1,500 km. Of course, there are ways to mitigate this, like walking routes or feeding your accompanying Mewtwo Poffins, but you're still in for a trek.
For context, that's the equivalent of walking from Las Vegas to Seattle, Chicago to Dallas, or New York City to Jacksonville, Florida. For our European readers, that's like walking from London to Rome or from Berlin to Barcelona. Clearly, that's no small feat.
Of course, there is no time limit for this, but it's still a pain. It means that for the entirety of this walking distance, you'll need Mewtwo as your Buddy Pokemon, so you won't be able to earn walking candies from any other Pokemon, and ultimately you'll be stuck for a very long time.
