PlayStation has been making a lot of controversial, some might say anti-consumer, decisions in 2026, and it seems being loud isn’t going to change that. That’s why one group has turned to emulation instead, and the progress the still-young PS5 emulator has made in a short time likely has PlayStation worried.

Emulation hasn’t typically been something PlayStation has had to worry about. PlayStation games can be emulated, but people typically stick to the older titles that aren’t compatible with modern consoles. Now work to emulate PS5 games on PC, thanks to those recent controversial decisions, has begun, and it’s progressing quickly.

PS5 Emulator Can Already Boot Up Astro Bot

Just days after the news of the emulator, called SharpEmu, started to spread, we’ve already seen evidence of it being used to boot up Astro Bot on a PC. Shared by TechDroider on Twitter, a Discord user who goes by RSantila was reportedly able to get the PS5 exclusive to start up on a PC using emulation.

They almost certainly can’t play the game, nor even make it past those initial screens, but to go from the first news of this emulator to a game like Astro Bot even starting up at all in a matter of days is huge. It demonstrates that there are a lot of people hopping aboard this bandwagon as word begins to spread, and that before you know it, Astro Bot and other PS5 exclusives could be fully playable through the emulator.

Leaving PC And Physical Releases Behind Has Forced Players' Hands

It’s unclear when exactly work on SharpEmu began, but it seems to have been spurred on by PlayStation’s decision to stop putting its single-player games on PC. Not the most unpopular decision PlayStation has made lately, but one that upset more of its potential player base than it likely realizes.

The push to get SharpEmu functional fast seems to have been brought on by PlayStation announcing that, from 2028, it will no longer produce physical versions of its games. At least not ones that come on discs - they will simply be codes in boxes.

People continue to voice their concerns, but PlayStation doesn’t seem to be listening. That has seemingly led to even more people than before throwing their hands up and looking to emulation. No, it won’t fill the hole left by the physical games they truly want, but it may provide a way for them to play PS5 games without being forced down an avenue they don’t want to take.

At the very least, you’d hope that the pace at which this SharpEmu project is progressing, it will force PlayStation to take notice and do something. Especially when this is something that could drastically affect its bottom line, which is clearly all it really cares about. PlayStation might be powerless to put a stop to SharpEmu, however, as emulators are perfectly legal, a fact that has bothered Nintendo's incredibly busy legal team for years.
