Mining is one of the many important tasks you'll need to complete if you hope to progress through the story of Moonlight Peaks and make your farm the best it can be.

You'll begin the game with a Rusty Pickaxe that's good enough to get the job done early on, but to mine finer materials, you'll need to upgrade your tools. And unfortunately, the upgrades don't come cheap.

All Pickaxe Upgrades

As you may have already noticed, there are certain materials you won't be able to mine with your Rusty Pickaxe. So, if you want to get better materials, you'll first need to make a few upgrades.

Ridge sells all tool upgrades at the Howling Hammer, and each one must be purchased in order. For example, the Iron Pickaxe must be purchased before the Gold Pickaxe, because each previous upgrade is a required material for the next. It does not matter which tools you upgrade when, but it's recommended that you upgrade each one as soon as you can.

Once you have the Gold Pickaxe, head over to Webb of Wonders to have your Pickaxe turned into an Enchanted Pickaxe. This final upgrade is the best upgrade you can get for the Pickaxe and stops it from wasting energy when used.

These are the pickaxe upgrades that will be required to mine all materials in the game:

Upgrade

Requirements

Copper Pickaxe

1x Rusty Pickaxe, 3x Copper Bars, 1,000 Gold

Iron Pickaxe

1x Copper Pickaxe, 3x Iron Bars, 4,000 Gold

Gold Pickaxe

1x Iron Pickaxe, 3x Gold Bars, 16,000 Gold

Enchanted Pickaxe

1x Gold Pickaxe, 5x Mana Essence, 48,000 Gold

The Gold Pickaxe and everything after it are not technically required for any material, but they will destroy deposits faster and use less energy.

In addition to the actual Pickaxe tool, you can also purchase a spell for Ethereal Pickaxes at the Webb of Wonders. This spell and its higher-level versions will create phantom Pickaxes that will aid you while mining.

The higher the spell level, the more assistance you'll have. Unlike traditional upgrades, you can utilize this spell regardless of what Pickaxe you have.

All Mining Resource Requirements And Locations

Most early-game mining resources are found in the Cave of Echoes, on the far western beach of Misty Shores. This cave becomes accessible after completing a quest in which Orlock is forced to apologize to Fiona. The Crystal Cave entrance becomes accessible after upgrading your tools and making progress in the game.

Every resource has a larger deposit variant that gives multiples of the resource at once. To mine those, you typically need a tool one level higher than what is needed for the small deposits. For example, small rocks can be mined with a Rusty Pickaxe, but large boulders that contain several Stones at a time require a Copper Pickaxe.

Once you've mined these materials, you can turn the Copper, Iron, and Gold into Bars using a Furnace, Stone into Refined Stone using a Refiner, and the Crystals into a powder using the Enchanted Mortar.

How To Mine Gold

Player looking up at a Gold deposit in a cave in Moonlight Peaks.

As you may have noticed, gold deposits are a bit out of reach in the cave, even once you know where to find them. This is likely an intentional way for the game to pace players a bit, as you won't actually be able to mine any Gold, even with the right tool, until you've completed the story quest, A Curious Passage.

This quest will lead you to unlock a new area called Luna Bay. I won't dive into too much of what happens there to avoid spoiling it, but just be aware that you will not be able to reach any of the Gold deposits in the game until you've unlocked this area and progressed enough to unlock your second transformation form.

You'll unlock access to more Gold deposits once you have your third transformation form, too.

The associated quest for this area should be unlocked once you reach Winter in Year 1. Depending on your progress, you may unlock it sooner, but if you still haven't triggered it by Year 2, then you likely have other story quests that are not yet completed. Additionally, you also need to have completed the quest tied to your Hellkitten form.
