Magneto's Fate in X-Men '97 Season 2, Explained
After the events of X-Men '97 Season 1, Magneto's story takes him far away from the present day when he, Professor X, and several other X-Men are transported back to ancient Egypt. There, they encounter En Sabah Nur before he becomes Apocalypse, giving the team of heroes an opportunity to stop one of their greatest threats before he rises to power. For Magneto, the situation carries a different weight because Apocalypse represents a version of mutant ideology built entirely around strength and domination. Magneto attempts to guide En Sabah Nur toward a different path, a surprising choice for a character who once believed fear was the only way mutants could survive.
However, when Nur ultimately embraces his future as Apocalypse after the X-Men fail to stop him from becoming one with Celestial technology, Magneto is forced into a tense fight, and the sequence gradually shifts from a battle of power into a moment of sheer desperation. His final moments come toward the end of Season 2, Episode 4, when Magneto sends the X-Men back to the future, and Apocalypse creates a black hole that threatens Ramatut City. Magneto exhausts all of his magnetic power to contain it, but he's left gravely injured. Apocalypse then obliterates him, killing him in front of Professor X and leaving only his helmet behind. It's a heartbreaking end to the character as well as one of the X-Men's most important relationships, and the visual of Magneto trying to contain the black hole reinforces just how much he is willing to endure.
Magneto's Legacy is Forever Changed in X-Men '97
Rather than dying as the revolutionary who tried to force the world to accept mutants, Magneto dies protecting that world, which is exactly what makes X-Men '97 Season 2's plot twist so significant. Magneto's legacy has traditionally been defined by whether he was right about humanity, but Season 2, Episode 4 changes that conversation by showing that his most impressive victory was proving he could become something more than his fears. He spent decades believing survival required power, but his final act ultimately shows that compassion and sacrifice were his greatest strengths.
