ABB acquires SiC specialist Advantics

Swiss tech giant ABB is acquiring French company Advantics to strengthen its portfolio of fast-charging solutions. Advantics develops power electronics based on silicon carbide (SiC), which can be used in charging infrastructure, among other applications.

The companies have not disclosed the financial details of the acquisition, although the transaction is expected to close in Q4 of 2026. Advantics, based in Saint-Genis-Pouilly, develops hardware and software for power conversion. According to the company, its power modules achieve efficiencies of up to 99 per cent. ABB plans to integrate this technology with its existing portfolio for protection technology, energy distribution, digital control, and energy management.

With this acquisition, ABB is strengthening its offering for direct current applications. Such systems are gaining importance in the context of electrification, as they avoid repeated conversions between AC and DC, thereby reducing energy losses. In electric vehicle charging infrastructure, the power electronics used play a central role. Silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors enable higher switching frequencies, lower losses, and more compact systems compared to conventional silicon components. This allows fast-charging systems to be designed more efficiently and to achieve higher power levels.

ABB therefore views the acquisition as a strategic complement to its existing DC portfolio. Advantics brings both expertise in silicon carbide power electronics and engineering competence for compact power converters, explains Massimiliano Cifalitti, Head of ABB’s Smart Power Division. Advantics founder and CEO Michal Elias described electrification as a key driver of increasing demand for intelligent and efficient power conversion.
