Skywell pauses UK sales as importer ceases operations
Innovation Automotive ceased trading at the end of June, prompting Skywell to suspend sales while it searches for a new distribution partner. According to the former importer, all remaining vehicle stock was purchased and registered before the closure. Skywell entered the British market in 2024 and currently sells a single model, the BE11 electric SUV.
David Clark, General Manager at Innovation Automotive, attributed the decision to the investment required to remain competitive in the UK market. “The UK is one of the most competitive new car markets in Europe, with a strong focus on electrification – and with such an influx of new Chinese brands making their appearance in the UK – it requires continuous, significant investment from the OEM or the appointed distributor to remain competitive,” he told The Sun.
He stressed that the closure was unrelated to the vehicle manufacturer itself. “The closure of Innovation Automotive is in no way a reflection upon Skywell, who are now seeking an alternative distributor for the UK market,” Clark is quoted as saying.
The former importer stated that it still holds a substantial inventory of spare parts and is working to transfer these to a new operator. Clark also indicated that responsibility for warranty administration is expected to transfer to a new organisation.
According to registration data cited by the former importer, 127 Skywell vehicles are currently registered in the UK, including 64 registrations recorded in June during the wind-down of operations. Prior to the sales pause, the brand was represented by 16 dealerships nationwide.
Skywell had previously outlined plans to expand its UK electric vehicle portfolio beyond the BE11. Those plans are now on hold pending the appointment of a new importer and distributor for the market.
