Blue Beetle is returning in Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, 3 years after James Gunn called him "the first DCU character"

Xolo Maridueña is returning as Blue Beetle in the upcoming DCU movie Man of Tomorrow. He'll be reprising his role as Jaime Reyes, a teenager given super powers by an alien beetle, for the first time since his 2023 solo movie.

At the moment, it's not been revealed how he fits into the Superman follow-up Man of Tomorrow, directed by James Gunn. However, we have known for a while that the DC Studios co-CEO has wanted the character as part of his universe.

Back in 2023, Gunn appeared on Michael Rosenbaum's podcast where he called Blue Beetle "the first DCU character". However, he did also clarify that "the first full DCU movie is Superman," which is a bit confusing. It seems Reyes is canon, but his movie is not.

Speaking more recently, Gunn said he feels that Reyes will "fit in very nicely" with his new DCU. He said in 2025 that he says only a "couple things" will have to be retconned to bring him in, just like with Peacemaker.

Man of Tomorrow sees David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult team up as Clark Kent and Lex Luthor in the fight against a new villain: Brainiac. It's looking like it will be a big team-up movie too with Isabela Merced's Hawkgirl, Milly Alcock's Supergirl, Aaron Pierre's Green Lantern, and Adria Arjona's unnamed hero in the cast.

Following the box office struggles of Supergirl, the next DCU project is Lanterns, which heads to HBO Max in August. After that Man of Tomorrow flies onto our screens on July 9, 2027. For more, check out our guides to upcoming superhero movies and upcoming DC movies and shows.
