Polish games firm CD Projekt has opted to change its name to CD Projekt Red.

The decision was voted on at the company's general meeting on June 23as spotted by local finance outlet Bankier.pl – and was done to "unify the company's name with that of the CD Projekt Red studio", according to justification put forward by management.

CD Projekt was founded in 1994 as a distributor for foreign video games in Poland. Eight years later, the company set up the CD Projekt Red studio to develop a game based on The Witcher book series, for which it had acquired the rights.

"The studio's activities currently correspond to the Company's core operational activity, which consists of producing and publishing video games and managing the Company's brands, including through the creation and licensing of accompanying products," management wrote in justification of the name change ahead of the general meeting.

"In the opinion of the management board, the new company name will ensure consistency in the communication of the CD Projekt Red brand, which will, among other things, facilitate the identification of the company with its products on the global market."

In addition to the CD Projekt Red studio, the CD Projekt holding company also used to have the GOG storefront under its umbrella. At the end of 2025, CD Projekt sold the PC platform to Michał Kiciński, one of the its founders, for $25 million.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz following the deal's being announced, GOG managing director Maciej Gołębiewski said that CD Projekt initiated the deal, but added that this did not come as a surprise.

"We have different strategies," he said. "GOG has a different strategy, CD Projekt has [its] own strategy. So I think at this point it was really natural."

CD Projekt Red is currently working on The Witcher 4, while the company's Boston office is handling development on a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. There's also a multiplayer game set in The Witcher universe in the works at CD Projekt Red North America – codenamed Project Sirius – while CD Projekt Red is also developing its first original IP in Project Hadar.
