Daemons of the Shadow Realm: The Significance of Pairs

Daemons of the Shadow Realm, the anime adaptation of Hiromu Arakawa’s latest dark fantasy manga, has rapidly enchanted fans since its debut during the Spring 2026 season. This series has managed to adapt the best traits of its author’s most famous work, Fullmetal Alchemist, and has utilized them to tell yet another amazing story that will keep fans entertained until the end of its 24-episode run.
Yet, as is often the case with Arakawa’s manga, several complex themes help drive the plot, serving as sources of conflict and resolution for the heroes. One of the most intriguing aspects is the prevalence of pairs, as almost every aspect of this series has a direct opposite, from the Daemons themselves to the issues that plague the characters' lives.
What Is Daemons of the Shadow Realm?
Beginning serialization in December 2021, Daemons of the Shadow Realm is the latest series created by the celebrated manga author Hiromu Arakawa, one of the most talented women in the industry. The series is set in a world where magic and monsters are not mere myth, as they remain hidden inside another dimension known as the Shadow Realm. While most humans go about their lives unaware of these creatures, certain people are born with the ability to control them and use their abilities for good or evil.
Such is the case for twin siblings Asa and Yuru, who were destined to become the next warriors to keep the fragile balance of the planet. Yuru, who has spent his entire life surrounded by the walls of his remote, Edo-era-inspired village, has his whole world flipped upside down when he discovers that the sister whom he grew up with is a fake. The boy soon discovers that his family departed the village years ago, without any explanation, leaving him behind and separating him from his true sister.
With nothing more to lose after his home is brutally attacked, Yoru finds himself on a quest to find Asa, learn more about his destiny, and discover the truth behind his family’s choices. Lamentably, the world has not stopped progressing while he was trapped in his village, forcing him to come face to face with a much more advanced version of Japan than he could have ever imagined possible. The series takes inspiration from the author’s previous works, but it does improve on several aspects, making it a true delight for audiences.
What Are Daemons?
Born in the mysterious titular Shadow Realm, Daemons are powerful spirits with amazing powers who can form contracts with spiritually awakened humans to help them achieve their goals. These beings do not have a defined appearance and can look like almost anything, from a muscular humanoid to a white horse. The only known rule that binds these monsters is the need for them to always act and exist in pairs. As such, each of the pairs’ parts acts as a complement to the other, embodying a single idea together.
These creatures can exist on their own, but more often than not decide to form blood contracts with humans to remain in the human realm. These contracts do not expire unless the master dies, although the bond can be preserved by transferring it to a blood relative. The number of Daemons known is limited, as half of them have been trapped inside the Shadow Realm, although the entire history of these creatures is still unknown.
The Concept of Pairs Is Pivotal to the Series
One of the main reasons why Arakawa’s manga tends to be popular among fans is the seamless way in which she integrates complex topics into the story. Her most famous work, Fullmetal Alchemist, is considered one of the best manga ever due in part to its antiwar sentiments and disability representation, which are included seamlessly without compromising or distracting from the plot. Daemons of the Shadow Realm is no exception to this rule; however, the topics found in this manga are far more philosophical.
Arguably, the most important one is the concept of pairs, which can be seen in almost every aspect of this world. For example, the main characters are not only twin siblings destined to be the rulers of the Daemons, but they are also living embodiments of the day and night cycle. On the day they were born, these heroes were given the titles of Twins of the Day and Night, each destined to control a unique ability that would allow them to bring balance to the world.
Asa and Yoru’s childhood also illustrates this idea, not only by having them be physically separated during childhood, but also because of the worlds in which they were raised. While the sister was allowed to adapt to the modern world and live in the present, Yoru remained trapped in the Edo era. Together, they become a team that can overcome the obstacles of both the current era and the deep traditions that surround their family. Daemons themselves also have a deep connection to this idea, being forced to always live in pairs and having abilities that complement each other.
Duality Is the Main Theme Driving the Story
The Daemon named Right is the living antithesis to the concept of breaking, an ability that can destroy or erase anything from reality. In contrast, Left possesses the skill to oppose any kind of sealing, which is described as the skill to create permanent attachments between two beings or concepts. These characters are not only opposites of each other, one preventing the universe from being destroyed and the other from halting all changes, but they also act as mirrors of the protagonists, Asa and Yoru. The heroes were prophesied to hold absolute control over the concepts of Breaking and Sealing.
Asa, who was able to awaken her abilities after being killed and brought back to life, can break anything she desires by simply pointing at it. This ability can be used to eliminate obstacles or even kill opponents, yet it can also be utilized to destroy any idea or law of reality. Right is the only creature in existence who can stop Asa’s powers. The same concept applies to Yoru and Left, although this event has not yet taken place in the manga.
When the boy was born, it was foretold that he would one day have absolute dominion over Seal, a powerful skill that can permanently store or preserve anything. The most common use of this ability is trapping Daemons in Relic Forms, although its powers go much further. If Yoru wishes, he could turn any concept into a universal constant, completely breaking the laws of reality. Left’s abilities exist to prevent these issues from ever occurring.

While the true origin of the concept of pairs has not yet been revealed by the author, Daemons of the Shadow Realm has given fans several hints as to what inspired this idea. The most blatant comes during the beginning of the series, with Yoru forming a blood contract with the spirits acting as the gate guardians of his village. In Japanese folklore and mythology, these statues were often depicted as complementary Onis, akin to Western demons, that were tasked with repelling evil spirits and energies from the town.
The concept of Daemons itself also appears to be heavily inspired by Shinto and Taoist ideals, being spirits from other worlds that can interact with the human realm but become stronger when aided by a living being. As such, it is not outlandish to assume that the idea of pairs and their prevalence in the series comes from the same religious origin, more specifically, the concept of balance that belongs to several Eastern practices. Unlike the rigid idea of equilibrium that most humans hold today, the Shinto religion saw balance as a living, moving energy that ruled the universe.
Humans were not meant to try to control this concept, but instead accept it as a reality and coexist peacefully with nature and the spirits that inhabit it. Working against this balance is what would one day destroy humanity, as the universe itself would fight against the growing chaos. This idea seems to be what will drive the story of the manga forward, as more recent chapters have revealed that humans separated their world from the Shadow Realm, breaking the innate bond between them.
Could Asa and Yoru’s Mission Be to Restore This Bond?
As the story of Daemons of the Shadow Realm has progressed, fans have learned why half of the titular monsters have been trapped inside their home universe. Long ago, during a gruesome war between the East and West, humans with abilities to control Daemons were sought after and manipulated into becoming tools of destruction, forcing a powerful Master to sever the connection between the realms. This decision, while noble, might have irreparably caused the balance in the universe to be shattered.
Asa and Yoru, as the humans destined to rule over Daemons and save the world from certain destruction, might be tasked with restoring the link between their world and the Shadow Realm. This could explain why they are being given abilities that can break, restore, or perpetuate universal laws. Nonetheless, due to Yoru’s powers still not being explained in their entirety, the direction that the story will take is hard for fans to predict accurately.
