It was only a few years ago that the term "friendslop" was coined, and since then, we have seen hundreds of fun and hilarious co-op games explode into the gaming world. What makes this wave of multiplayer action all the more impressive is that it's being driven by independent developers outside the AAA space.

With very little experience and virtually no budget at all, these creators are showing that fun doesn't have to cost millions of dollars, and can instead be found in sharing an experience with others. It doesn't matter if you're into horror, sports, strategy, or something else entirely; there is bound to be a friendslop game out there that can bring plenty of laughs to virtually any friend group.

Test your knowledge.

Super Battle Golf

Chaos Over Competition

  • Turns golf into a fast-paced party game.
  • Prioritizes laughter over realism.

Super Battle Golf turns a slow and calculated game into a rush for the finish, giving you and the rest of the players an array of different items that are only designed to cause as much mayhem as possible. You might find yourself in the lead at one point, only for your friend to come along with a golf cart to ruin your day, removing all the stress and replacing it with pure fun.

I think a big reason why the game gained so much traction is the low barrier to entry. It doesn't matter if your friend group consists of try-hard FPS fans or diehard RPG lovers; there is joy to be had for everyone and a small amount of glory for those who come out on top.

Airport Security Sucks!

Everyday Frustrations Made Funny

  • Airport disasters become multiplayer challenges.
  • Two very different teams and styles.

Airport Security Sucks! delivers exactly what it says on the tin. You are split into two teams, one protecting the airport and the other trying to disrupt it with everything from explosives to contraband. You need to work together to come up with increasingly creative ideas on both sides of the fight.

As time went on, I found that each team offered new and inventive ways to attack and counterattack. There are so many additional tools and weapons that the simple act of passing through security becomes an absolute warzone. Now with plenty of additional maps and objectives to complete, the complete package has shown it has enough fun-factor to compete with games boasting 100 times the budget and scale.

Roadside Research

Not Your Average Shopkeepers

  • Satisfying shop simulation.
  • Wrapped in an amusing extraterrestrial theme.

Simulation games have become a real force in the gaming market, and Roadside Research adds another layer to separate itself from the crowd. Playing as a ragtag group of lovable aliens, your objective is to run a gas station whilst remaining undetected, as one wrong step could result in the whole group being turned into a pile of green goo.

Where normally you would be happily stocking shelves and minding your own business, there is now a whole other element of danger that never goes away. The Early Access updates are rolling out in full force, so as great as the game is now, it is only going to get better from here.

Hold Your King

Royalty Demands The Royal Treatment

  • Physics-based co-op platformer.
  • Very little margin for error.

Hold Your King is another in a long line of co-op rage games that will push even the strongest friendships to their limit. Carrying a ragdolling king, you need to navigate a series of obstacles, both horizontally and vertically, keeping the royalty on board a stretcher by carefully balancing it from either end.

One misstep from the front or a trip from the back, and suddenly, a good chunk of progress can be reset, and the blame game only gets worse from there. It isn't as punishing as other rage games, which makes it far more chill and silly, but there will still be more than a few moments where relationships will be put to the test.

Flock Around

Gotta Snap 'Em All

  • Cozy photography game with light progression.
  • Shared comfort and fun.

Flock Around removes all the stress and intensity that comes with traditional creature collectors, and chooses relaxation and calm instead. It's all about snapping great pictures of birds and slowly filling out your book, all while grabbing a few cute hats and costumes to make your silly characters all the more likable.

This kind of multiplayer game brings with it a more social aspect, where friends and family can come together to talk and laugh without the constant need for input. It is very clear the game was made with a lot of love, from the quaint visuals to the actual concept at its heart, and you really feel that affection the second you set foot into nature.

Burglin' Gnomes

Absurdity Right Out Of The Gate

  • Escalating heist jobs.
  • Intentionally over the top.

Burglin' Gnomes is the perfect combination of fantasy and tomfoolery, throwing you into an array of wacky scenarios in which you need to steal, hide, and complete tasks, all to please the High-Gnome. No mission is ever going to be a walk in the park. While you may be small and nimble, there are still ways a job can go south pretty fast.

After just a few minutes, you will be crying on the floor and laughing at the sheer chaos that can ensue, whether on purpose or completely by accident. There is actually a pretty nice progression loop that sees you upgrading your home to make missions easier over time, giving it even more replay value than it already has.

Crashout Crew

Disaster Is Guaranteed

  • Physics-filled tasks.
  • Progressively more insane demands.

The creators of PEAK have done it again. This time, Crashout Crew is about cooperating to fulfil orders in the most chaotic warehouse imaginable. Time is of the essence, and it doesn't matter if you're picking up boxes or chickens; every second counts, and teamwork is the only way to make it to the deadline.

The real fun begins later on as the orders become more complex, alongside additional obstacles that cover each map and result in the majority of the team's failures. It's all about talking and staying composed, and if you can nail the basics, then I promise you will be rewarded with dozens of hours of fun.

YapYap

The Words Are The Power

  • Uses voice commands for spellcasting.
  • Hilarious thanks to its horror setting.

YapYap takes inspiration from other co-op horror games but brings with it a very magical twist. Using your voice as a means to cast spells, your group must traverse fantastical dungeons full of treasures and monsters, sending out tornadoes and fireballs and teleporting all over the place with nothing but words.

I was surprised at just how well the voice recognition works, and after getting used to the spells and the pronunciation, you really start to feel like a true wizard. If you are tired of games like R.E.P.O. and Lethal Company, then YapYap is the perfect replacement, one that I would argue is even better than both of them.
