Halo Studios Lead "Bullying" Allegations Backed Up By Another Source
At TheGamer, you will often find her chatting to game developers, writers, and actors about their crafts. This includes a deep dive into Cyberpunk 2077's narrative, and a series on the making of the Fable trilogy.
She also follows industrial action and existential threats to its workers, particularly the use of generative AI. As part of this, she's explored how AI Darth Vader sets a dangerous precedent, and was one of the first reporters to look into generative AI dating companions.
Over the weekend, allegations concerning the head of Halo Studios, Pierre Hintze, came to light. As reported by YouTuber Reds Gaming, multiple workers at Halo Studios described Hintze as being verbally abusive and argued that his leadership was "destroying the Halo franchise."
Now, Jez Corden from Windows Central has corroborated some of the claims made in the video. In his own report, Corden says he's heard that Hintze is a "controversial" figure at the studio, and that his behaviour led to HR complaints.
Another Report On Pierre Hintze's Behaviour At Halo Studios Describes Him As "Controversial"
Speaking with several former and current employees, Corden shares what he's heard about Hintze, and how staff feel "antagonised and undermined" when they have to work with him.
"I saw emails sent to Microsoft HR that alleged 'bullying' on the part of Pierre Hintze, criticising his treatment of staff," Corden writes. He also says that: "Hintze does seem to harbour a capacity for creating friction between his team and Xbox more broadly, and is a generally controversial figure internally."
With that said, Corden says that one of his sources spoke of Hintze more positively. They said that Hintze had a "complete lack" of people skills, arguing that it was not malicious. However, it seems that multiple workers who were on the receiving end of his comments would push back against that characterisation.
Microsoft is yet to respond to these allegations. While we now have two sources backing up claims that Hintze was reported to HR, it appears that Microsoft did not uphold the complaints.
Now, some are calling on Xbox head Asha Sharma to boot Hintze and replace him with someone else - and even if not for the allegations, then for the sorry state of the Halo series under his leadership. He joined the company when it was still 343 Industries in 2018, later becoming head of Halo Studios in 2022. He has overseen the disastrous ongoing development of Halo Infinite during this time.
