Use this little doggy friend to help you sniff out chromite
Where to find chromite in Palworld
As you progress in Palworld, you'll need to use chromite to make some later crafts. Chromite is buried in caves on Feybreak Island, but to find it, you'll either need a metal detector, or a Smokie with its special equip unlocked. Both of these will point out where the chromite deposits are, unearthing them from the ground for you to harvest.
Using Smokie's Pal skill is admittedly faster than using the metal detector, but if you want to save a Pal slot and would rather carry around the metal detector, then we provide that option, too.
Below, we explain where to find chromite in Palworld, and how to make a metal detector (or find a Smokie) to help you find it.
Where to find chromite in Palworld
Chromite functions a little differently than other ores in Palworld. Rather than looking for visible ore deposits around the map, you need either a metal detector or a Smokie. We explain how to get both in the sections below, so make sure to get one before you start your search or else you won't be able to farm chromite.
Once you have your metal detector or Smokie pal, head to Feybreak Island, which is in the southwest part of the map. Our favorite place to find chromite is in Shield Dragon Tunnel, which is right next to the teleport waypoint of the same name.
Inside the cave, there's a Silvegis alpha Pal, so make sure to defeat that so it doesn't get in the way. After it's gone, either use the metal detector or Smokie's skill to find the chromite deposits. Smokie's skill will automatically dig up any deposits nearby, whereas you'll need to use the metal detector manually. It will ping faster as it gets closer to the deposit, and once you're close enough, it'll pop out of the ground.
We were able to dig up around 50 chromite per deposit.
How to get a metal detector in Palworld
To get a metal detector, you'll need to reach level 58, at which point you'll be able to unlock it from the technology tree. Once you have it unlocked, you can craft one at a crafting table using these items:
- 30 plasteel (made using crude oil and ore)
- 100 Paldium fragments (made from stone)
- 15 computers (made from circuit boards, plasteel, bio batteries, and carbon fiber)
- 20 nightstar sand (harvested from glowing spots in the sand around Feybreak Island)
You'll need a production assembly line 2 or better in order to make a metal detector. You can equip the metal detector as a weapon in your loadout to use it.
Notably, if you're struggling to find nightstar sand, teleport to the northern Scorched Ashland waypoint at night. You should be able to find more than enough there, glowing on the ground at night.
Where to find Smokie and Smokie's harness in Palworld
If you don't want to dump the above materials into the game, you can instead opt to find a Smokie, and unlock Smokie's harness instead. Smokies are found virtually all over Feybreak Island, both at day and night. In fact, as you traverse this area, you'll probably have a harder time not running into these little whispy dogs.
Once you have a Smokie, you can unlock Smokie's harness in the technology tree at level 58. To make it, you'll need the following materials at a Pal Gear workbench:
- 20 leather
- 50 fiber
- 5 dark fragments (dropped by Starryon, Omascul, Splatterina, Dazzi Noct, Kitsun Noct, Celesdir Noct, Solenne, Bellanoir, and Bellanoir Libero)
- 40 Paldium fragments
Once you have the harness unlocked, you should be able to freely use Smokie's partner skill by holding down F when Smokie is out. You don't need to physically equip the harness, as it'll just automatically unlock the ability permanently.
