How Does Crossplay Work in Black Ops & Black Ops 2?
There has been some confusion surrounding crossplay in Black Ops and Black Ops 2 with the recent PS4 and PS5 ports of the classic Call of Duty titles. Below, we will clear up any confusion and questions that you have regarding the ports, but what's important to know first is that PS4 and PS5 players will have crossplay between each other, but not with other consoles. Find out exactly how crossplay works in Black Ops 1 & 2 with the information provided below.
PlayStation Crossplay Matchmaking, Explained
PS4 and PS5 players can matchmake with each other, but there's no crossplay with PS3, Xbox, or PC. This means that you can play the PS4 version of Black Ops and Black Ops 2 and still matchmake with players on the PS5 version, and vice versa. Remember, there's no difference between the two versions, as they are both 60fps and 1080p, so feel free to download either version on your PS5, but we'd recommend the PS4 version if you're having performance issues (as seen here).
Does DLC & the Season Pass Affect Matchmaking?
Season Pass and non-Season Pass owners can matchmake together in Black Ops and Black Ops 2. This means that you won't need to disable the DLC in order to join public lobbies with players who do not own the DLC, so feel free to grab the Season Pass and enjoy the Multiplayer and Zombies maps featured. Matchmaking with players who do not own the Season Pass simply means that the DLC maps will not be in the rotation, but you are free to matchmake with no issues!
Is There Crossplay Between PlayStation, Xbox, and PC?
There is no crossplay between platforms; there is only crossplay between the PS4 and PS5 generations. For a quick breakdown, here's how crossplay works:
| Console | Is There Crossplay? |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Yes, with PS4 |
| PlayStation 4 | Yes, with PS5 |
| PlayStation 3 | No |
| Xbox Series X|S | Only with Xbox |
| Xbox One | Only with Xbox |
